Frequently Asked Questions

“MCE” stands for mixed cellulose esters, a membrane material made from a combination of cellulose acetate and nitrocellulose that is hydrophilic and ideal for capturing particles in liquid samples. The 0.45 µm pore size refers to the diameter of the membrane openings, which allows liquid to pass through while retaining particles larger than about 0.45 microns — a standard for microbiological and environmental testing.

These 0.45 µm MCE membranes are commonly used for microbiological examination of water, wastewater, pharmaceuticals, food, and beverage samples, as well as for air monitoring and particulate analysis, thanks to their reliable particle retention and flow characteristics.

The black grid lines visible on the membranes help reduce eye fatigue and improve accuracy when counting colonies or particulates under microscopy, because each square represents a defined portion of the filtration area and enhances visual contrast.

This product comes in individual packaging but is non-sterile, which works well for routine filtration. For sterile applications, look for versions specifically labeled “presterilized by EtO” or similar sterilization methods in the product line.

A 47 mm membrane disc has an approximate filtration area of 9.6 cm², giving a reasonable surface for capturing bacteria and particulates while still maintaining good flow rates and manageable vacuum or pressure requirements.
